Watched a special on this person. Sharbat Gula is her name. She was the "Face of Afghanistan" on the cover of National Geographic 21 years ago. This special was aired in 2003, but this is the first time I have seen it. I remember seeing her picture back then and was stunned by her haunting beauty. Her eyes pierced the soul.
Now, 21 years, later, I have seen her as she is today. Her complexion somewhat weathered, her skin ruddy, but her eyes now tell the story of a life of hardship. She has survived her time in the refugee camps in Pakistan and felt that her life was easier under the rule of the Taliban when they moved, once again, to Afghanistan.
